ReplyDeleteGERMANY
Manuel Neuer 7
Tremendous diving save to stop Griezmann’s early effort. No chance with the penalty.
Joshua Kimmich 6
Inexcusable to give the ball away in his own box to allow France’s second. Struck the woodwork moments later.
Jerome Boateng 6
Kept arrowing accurate balls forward like a quarter-back. Mistake allowed Giroud one-on-one but he got away with it. Went off injured.
Benedikt Howedes 7
Incredible tackle back on Giroud when he was through on goal late in the first half.
Jonas Hector 6
Played high up the left-hand side, pressuring Sagna, to help his side dominate possession.
Emre Can 6.5
First-half shot found the bottom left corner but Lloris got a hand to it. Booked for barging over Griezmann.
Bastian Schweinsteiger 7
Booked when his handball handed France a penalty. Seemed harsh. The captain broke up play well with interceptions and tough tackles.
Mesut Ozil 6
Silky touches, skills and dribbling throughout, but nothing incisive enough, which Germany needed. Booked for kicking the ball away.
Toni Kroos 6
Some wonderful passes in behind France’s defence and helped command the play.
Julian Draxler 5.5
Quiet for much of the match and was given a yellow card for a scissor challenge on Sissoko.
Thomas Muller 5.5
Miss. Miss. Miss. Surprisingly without a goal in the tournament and did not look at his best.
Substitutes:
Shkodran Mustafi (for Boateng on 61, 6)
N'Golo Kante (for Payet on 71, 6)
Andre-Pierre Gignac (for Giroud on 78, 6)
Manager: Joachim Low 5.5
Must have gone into the dressing room at half-time mystified as to how his team were behind.
FRANCE
Hugo Lloris 7.5
Down cat-like to his right to claw out Can’s low shot. Confident at crosses. Inspiring goalkeeping.
Bacary Sagna 6
Had a busy night dealing with Hector’s repeated runs forward and Germany’s revolving wingers.
Laurent Koscielny 7
Dealt with wave after wave of German attack with headers and clearances. Under pressure often.
Samuel Umtiti 7
Crucial sliding stretch to cut out Draxler’s through ball which would have played Ozil in on goal.
Patrice Evra 6.5
Easily bypassed in defence for much of the match as Germany targeted his flank. Good in attack.
Paul Pogba 7
Pounced on Kimmich’s mistake, displayed audacious skill to embarrass the full back further then set up the second.
Blaise Matuidi 6.5
Virtually camped inside his own penalty box in the first half. Great exchange of passes with Griezmann to almost score.
Moussa Sissoko 6
Needed to be more precise with passes when on the break, but often eased the pressure on his defence.
Antoine Griezmann 8
Excellent penalty give France an unexpected lead and sealed it with a poacher's second. Close to scoring in the seventh minute and struck the side netting.
Dimitri Payet 6
Showed flashes of skill which have sparkled in this tournament, but not his most dominating game.
Olivier Giroud 6
Should have done more when he caught out Boateng and was through on goal but was too slow.
Substitutes:
Mario Gotze (for Can on 67, 6)
Leroy Sane for Schweinsteiger on 79, 6)
Manager: Didier Deschamps 7
Big call to leave out Kante and name an unchanged line-up to the side which dismantled Iceland.
Referee:
Nicola Rizzoli (Italy) 5.5
Awarded an extremely harsh penalty against Germany. Apart from that controlled the game well.
Eurosport: MAN OF THE MATCH
ReplyDeleteSamuel Umtiti (France): During the first half onslaught, he held France together at the back, making a succession of vital interceptions and interventions. Given his age, experience, and dodgy performance on against Iceland on debut, this was a towering effort.
